it is done. and then to the very red state of south carolina. mark sanford has gone from the appalachian trail back to the campaign trail, and yesterday he made the transition look pretty easy. he beat a field of 16 candidates, but will have to stand in a runoff race, and things are getting whacky on the democrat side as well. they have elizabeth colbert-busch. this one has a reality show written all over it. joining me now for the robert behre. he's a political reporter for the "post" and "courier" and is coming to us via skype from charleston, south carolina. welcome back inside "the war room," robert. >> hi, thanks for having me. >> michael: so what is the feeling on the ground about sanford now? have people forgiven him for everything? >> 37% have. many are thinking that he is a shoe-in to win in two weeks when the april runoff rolls around. but i think the former congressman has a fighting chance especially if he can pull together some anti-sanford sentiment that still exists here. >> michael: but how much anti-sanford sentiment is there, if he actually went out

two. former south carolina governor mark sanford won the most votes in the republican primary. because he did not win more than 50% of the vote, sanford will face a challenger in a runoff. it is too close to call who his challenger will be. the winner of that will face colbert busch in the general election may 7th. joining me now, gene robinson and political analyst, dick harpootlian, chairman of the south carolina democratic party. you have been manning the south carolina desk here. counting every one of these votes as they come in. stephen colbert's sister won with 151% of the voters. >> ran against a perpetual candidate who, you know, wasn't going to win. so she won. so this will be very interesting. she's an interesting candidate in her own right and has a shot at a very red state of winning a congressional seat. >> dick, is mark sanford maybe the only republican she could beat in that district? >> well, i think that he is not the only republican but certainly is the easiest target. he is by no means home. we prefer to run against him. he has not only the app latch and trail and pr

as stephen colbert and more famous than his sister but not for a good reason, former governor mark sanford. he has a big national profile, but it is because of his fake hiking trip. mark sanford apologized, finished his term as governor and withdrew from public life for two years. now he is back, trying to win back the public's trust and respect by trying to win back the congressional seat that he once held for three terms. mr. hiking the trail is only one of 16 republicans trying for that seat. the others include the son of media mogul ted turner, his name is teddy, which makes ted turner hard to forget. mark sanford is the frontrunner in the primary, but unless he gets more than 50% of the vote in a field of 16 candidates, then it will be a runoff. he and who comes in second will have a runoff next month. the polls open tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. in south carolina. this is the first federal election in south carolina since they passed a law requiring photo id. justice department personnel will be monitoring to be sure they're in compliance with the voting rights act and we will be watching, t

comeback kid. mark sanford finished far ahead of the 15 other republican candidates in the primary for an open house seat. but sanford fell short of 50%, so now he's heading for a runoff. a recount is probably held to confirm his opponent. the winner of that race will face democrat elizabeth colbert bush. she's the sister of comedian stephen colbert and though she won her primary in a landslide, she'll have to fight hard to win on may 7th in this republican-leaning district. i'm joined now by cnn national political correspondent jim acosta. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, carol. that's right. you summed it up very nicely. mark sanford, after being left for dead in the political wilderness in south carolina is very much back on the campaign trail, very much back on a comeback mission here in south carolina. he trounce, as you said just a few moments ago, a field of 15 republican opponents to win the republican primary here in the race for the open seat in the first congressional district. and how did he do it, carol? he pretty much went around the state asking the vote
sanford is vying for the spot. let's start there. mark sanford, political come back, is it in the cards? >> reporter: in fact he is the apparent frontrunner in a 16-way race for the republican nomination, this less than four years after his highly public apology as governor for temporarily disappearing from the state to take a secret trip to argentina to visit his mistress, the revelation of the affair ended his marriage, many thought it would end his political career. the former governor and congressman is running for the old house seat he held from 95 through 2001 saying he learned not only from his experience in the say the house and on capitol hill but through his personal scandal. >> to go through the experiences i went through it hum -bls you. if it's anything that is needed in washington d.c. it's a greater level of humility from either party's perspective in where they are coming from. >> reporter: while sanford a former fox news contributor is running on his own experience a political newcomer with a well-known name is running on strong anti-washington sentiment in the district

that they expect that sanford could come out on top. if he doesn't had that 50%, there could be a run-off between the top two republicans. when you talk about a field this large, it is unusual and it shows how much people in south carolina want to be involved in politics. this is one of those states that has interesting drama. i've spent some time on the trail with governor sanford. he talked about the importance of trying to get back on the horse, if you will. he had sort of dropped out of life after he left the governor's mansion and had that very public kind of headline making scandal with his affair and the divorce that followed. took time out and now says he is trying to rebuild. whether he wins or not, he felt it was importance to get back in the game. he said he was very surprised at the warm reception he has received as he's been meeting and greeting. we certainly saw that following him along. but there are so many other candidates. many who hold local offices and have certainly plenty to offer as well. on the democratic side, there has been a lot of interest in elizabeth colbert bush who
